How it works

Three steps. No surprises.

Capacitra was designed so a tired sysadmin at 23:50 can recover gigabytes without reading a manual.

Pick a drive

Capacitra lists every drive and mount point. Pick one or click Browse… to scan a specific folder.

Scan in seconds

A multi-threaded crawler walks every file. Browse the tree even while the scan is still running.

Drill into bytes

Treemap, charts, folder tree, top files, duplicates, all synced to the selected folder. Right-click → Recycle Bin.

How Capacitra differs

An honest comparison.

FAQ

Questions you'd ask before downloading.

If something here doesn't answer your question, write to info@capacitra.com. A single human reads every message.

Is Capacitra really free?

Yes, for personal and commercial use. No locked features, no time-limited trial, no sign-up, no upsells. If it saves you time, that's already a win for us. Tell a colleague.

Does it send my data anywhere?

No. Capacitra runs entirely on your machine. There is no telemetry, analytics, crash reporter, A/B-testing SDK or auto-update phone-home. The only time it touches the network is if you point it at a network share to scan.

Does it work offline?

Yes, once installed, Capacitra never needs the internet. Pull your ethernet, switch off Wi-Fi, the app works exactly the same. The installer itself doesn't even require an account or activation key.

Where does Capacitra put its files?

Nowhere by default. The download is a single, portable Capacitra.exe. Drop it anywhere you like (desktop, USB stick, network share) and double-click. No installer, no registry keys, no background services, no scheduled tasks, no drivers, no shell extensions. Removing the app means deleting that one file.

Why is it so small?

Capacitra ships only what it needs. No bundled browser engine, no heavy media framework, no analytics SDK. The whole download is compact and starts in well under a second on a typical PC.

Windows says "Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app". What do I do?

This is the standard Windows SmartScreen warning for new applications that have not yet built up download reputation with Microsoft. It is shown for every fresh release of every unsigned Windows app, regardless of what the program actually does. Capacitra is safe — see the next question for the VirusTotal verification path.

To run Capacitra anyway:

  1. On the blue SmartScreen dialog, click More info (small link near the top of the message).
  2. A Run anyway button appears at the bottom.
  3. Click Run anyway. Capacitra starts normally.

You only have to do this once. Windows remembers your decision for that specific copy of Capacitra.exe.

The warning will be removed entirely in a future release once we attach a code-signing certificate to the binary.

My antivirus warned about Capacitra.exe. Is it safe?

Yes. Capacitra is open about what it does and what it ships. A small number of antivirus engines occasionally flag new, unsigned single-file Windows applications with a generic heuristic label because the binary format is uncommon, not because they have found actual malicious behaviour.

You can verify the full scan report on VirusTotal at any time. The major vendors most users have installed (Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender, Sophos, ESET, Avast, Trend Micro, F-Secure) all report Capacitra as clean.

If your scanner is one of the few that flags the file, you can submit it as a false positive to your vendor (most process this within a few days), or add Capacitra.exe to your local exclusion list. We also submit clearance requests to vendors after each release.

The full source-of-truth: every Capacitra build is reproducible from the same code path, never includes telemetry, never calls home, never modifies the registry, and never installs a background service. The privacy policy and cookies policy describe exactly what does and does not happen.

Can I scan network shares?

Yes. Point Capacitra at a mapped drive letter or a UNC path like \\server\share\folder. Scans run as fast as the share allows. Results stay on your machine; nothing is uploaded.

How is Capacitra different from other free disk tools?

The focus is a calm, modern dashboard that reports the way you want to read it: largest folders, oldest files, duplicates, breakdown by type, snapshots over time, and a smooth treemap. Plus a strict no-data, no-network stance that we don't compromise.

What about NTFS specifics, hardlinks and reparse points?

Capacitra follows directory junctions and reparse points only when you opt in from Settings, to avoid scanning the same content twice. Hardlinked files are counted once per logical path so the totals stay meaningful.

How do I support development?

The most useful things you can do today are reporting bugs, suggesting features, and telling colleagues about the app. Honest feedback to info@capacitra.com shapes the roadmap more than anything else.

Will you add feature X?

Maybe. Drop a line to info@capacitra.com with the use case. Roadmap is driven by what real users ask for, not by what looks good on a slide.

Where do I report a bug?

Email info@capacitra.com with the steps you took, your Windows version, and a screenshot if possible. Replies usually arrive within a couple of working days.

Can I redistribute Capacitra inside my organisation?

Yes. You may install it on any machines you own or operate, and you may share the unmodified installer internally. See the terms for the short legal version.
